In this programme, I thought I'd impress you with an old Chinese phrase that we use in English now.

Feifei
Oh, yes? Neil 要給我介紹一個英語中也會用到的中文諺語，這是真的嗎？Go on, then!

Neil
The phrase is jiggery-pokery.

Feifei
Jiggery-pokery? Oh, come on! 拜托，這哪兒是中文啊？That's not Chinese!

Neil
It is – everyone in China uses it, apparently.

Feifei
I don't think so. What does it mean, anyway?

Neil
‘Jiggery-pokery’ refers to dishonest behaviour that is intended to trick people.

Feifei
原來，單詞“jiggery-pokery”的意思是“騙局、詭計”，我們在口語中用它來表示“不誠實的，欺騙他人的行為”，也就好比漢語里的“騙人的伎倆”。Oh, hold on, were you trying to trick me just to illustrate this phrase?

Neil
Yes! I almost tricked you, didn't I?

Hmmm. I think we had better hear some examples of this phrase in action.

Examples
The company is being investigated after some shareholders accused it of jiggery-pokery.

I was surprised that the businessman got away with so much jiggery-pokery before he was finally caught and sent to prison.
